Congress for Democracy welcomes Danish Poll Result
Statement from Sir Michael Spicer MP and Austin
Mitchell MP
Co-Chairmen of the Congress for Democracy
Tonight's result in Denmark represents the first
occasion on which public opinion in Europe has been fully tested on the
progress of the European Union in general and the single currency in
particular.
The result confirms the growing evidence of public
disillusionment throughout Europe with both the undermining of
democratic government and the attempt to compress the monetary needs of
different economies into one currency. A blow has been struck for both
democratic freedom and economic prosperity and stability in Europe.
This result will give great comfort to the vast
majority of the British people who agree with the view that the Danes
have taken about joining the single currency. It gives further strength
to the participants in the Congress, who will be campaigning to retain
the pound should this be put to a referendum after the next general
election. It fully vindicates the views that have been expressed from
all sides of the political spectrum at the four meetings of the Congress
for Democracy over the past two years. Two of these meetings were
addressed by leading spokesmen for the Danish "No" Campaign:
Pia Kjaersgaard MP (Leader of the Danish People's Party) and Jens-Peter
Bonde MEP (Leader of the June Movement).
Participants in the Congress for
Democracy have warm links with our allies in Denmark who have fought so
successfully to
retain their national currency and sovereignty. The Congress
recognises that the outcome of the Danish referendum is of great importance to
the United Kingdom as well as to Denmark.
Jens-Peter Bonde MEP, a leader
of the campaign against Danish entry to the euro, was guest speaker at the Fourth Congress for
Democracy on 14 July 2000. He represents the June Movement
in
the European Parliament, in which he is also Chairman of the Group
for a Europe of Democracies and Diversities.
Pia Kjaersgaard MP, leader of
the Danish People's Party, was a guest speaker at the Third Congress for
Democracy.
