A Legal Assessment of the Draft Treaty

by

Martin Howe QC
Chairman, Congress for Democracy Legal and Constitutional Committee

It refutes the claim that the Treaty’s provisions constitute a mere tidying-up of existing legislation.

THE EURO: THE BATTLE FOR BRITISH HEARTS AND MINDS

by Andy Mullen and Brian Burkitt

Andy Mullen is a PhD student working with Dr Brian Burkitt in the Department of Applied Social Sciences at the University of Bradford. He is researching the response of the British Left to European integration since the Second World War.

Dr Brian Burkitt is Senior Lecturer in Economics at the Department of Applied Social Sciences, the University of Bradford. He is also the director of the European Economies Research Unit. He is author of Trade Unions and Wages (1975 and 1980), Trade Unions and the Economy (1979), Radical Political Economy (1984), The Political Economy of Social Credit and Guild Socialism (1997), The Impact of the Euro: Debating Britain’s Future (2001), and of more than 175 articles in refereed academic journals. He is a frequent contributor and commentator on economic issues, to newspapers and on television and radio.

The Euro: The Battle for British Hearts and Minds examines the government’s euro strategy and its institutional and legislative preparations for entry. The first part of the study outlines the government’s policy on euro membership. The second considers the argument that public opinion on euro membership is currently an obstacle to government policy by looking at the state of public opinion polls on the issue. The third presents evidence to support the contention that New Labour’s actual policy is one of ‘prepare and persuade’ by revealing the institutional and legislative preparations for entry that have been made, the two ‘low intensity’ pro-euro propaganda campaigns that have occurred, and the interventions by external actors to augment those campaigns. The fourth looks at the emerging components of the government’s euro strategy and the possible problems it faces in attempting to win a referendum. The fifth discusses the likely role of the media in a euro referendum propaganda campaign. The sixth looks at the present balance of forces on euro membership, whilst the seventh part concludes.

The Euro: The Battle for British Hearts and Minds  costs £5, UK post free. Please print and complete the order form below and return to us, together with your cheque.
