The Sixth Congress for Democracy

was held on Friday 13 July 2001

at Church House, Dean's Yard, Westminster.

The post-election Sixth Congress looked at the new political situation after the general election and discussed how best to work together to achieve our goal of keeping an independent pound.

A panel of representatives from the main campaigning groups gave their views to the Sixth Congress on how we should plan the referendum campaign. This was followed by a full discussion.

The other agenda items were speeches from Roger Pincham, (Liberal Democrat and former Chairman of the Liberal Party) who made the case for keeping an independent pound,
Sir Oliver Wright, former UK Ambassador to Washington
, who spoke on Britain’s relationship with the EU and the world, and
Roger Helmer MEP
, who spoke on democracy.

Two discussion papers were also presented to the Sixth Congress: from Frederick Forsyth (Chairman of the Congress for Democracy Constitutional Committee) on parliamentary democracy, and from David Green (Communications Director, Liberal Party) on the democratic deficit.
